Artificial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 33

Hey there folks!

Some mellow, electronic stuff this week. A few fun synchronicities, too.

Symphony Of Science is composer John D. Boswell creating music using Carl Sagan's Cosmos and other bits of science education as vocals. It's great!

Carl's metaphor of people leaving Earth as "venturing into an ocean" is an unexpectedly apt match with a script from the podcast Flash Forward that was written by a neural net artificial intelligence. (More info at that link.)  Oceans, and Mars, but also... "behandings"? It's weird, even before I edited it and added echo & reverb, etc. The Flash Forward episode also included excerpts from an AI-written podcast and a sci-fi short, which you can find below.

Numbers. (it turns out there are other bands with similar names)

Numbers, Mogwai, and Tortoise are all kind of in the genre of "post-rock", which is... i dunno, pretty mellow? Not a lot of drums, but lots of drones.

It's the picture on his Wikipedia page, I didn't do anything to it.

Aphex Twin, aka Richerd D. James, is mostly a dance/techno guy, but his debut album "Selected Ambient Works 85–92" put him in a mellow category. The track here is from the follow-up "Selected Ambient Works Volume II", which was pretty much completely beatless.

Speaking of ambient, here's another Judee Sill track recorded by holding a mic up to the speaker of a TV broadcasting her 1972 BBC concert. I hope you didn't really need to understand the lyrics...


Here's the full video of the A.I.-written Idea Channel episode. Pretty crazy.

I had to include a pic of Wendy Mae's Car Horn Organ even it's not heard.

I'll bet you can figure out what Wendy Mae Chambers track Brooklyn Bridge is about just by listening to it.

Sadly there was never a Ruby cartoon. It would've been great.

Hey there folks!

Some languages other than English this week, some of them "real" and some not.

I first heard Jaan Pehechan Ho in the opening of the movie Ghost World.  It's originally from a film called Gumnaam. I recommend Ghost World but you can skip Gumnaam unless you really like Indian movies. It's kind of a really boring version of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None".

Sigur Rós and Caramba are both Scandinavian bands that recorded songs in made-up languages. Sigur Rós has songs in Hopelandish as well as their native Icelandic, while Sweeden's Caramba's songs are in nonsense languages. Some of them are recognizably "fake Russian" or "fake German", but I can't tell what language "Hubba Hubba Zoot Zoot" is supposed to sound like.

By the way, I cut out approximately the middle third of the Sigur Ros track to leave just the mellower bits. Here's a visual representation of that:

There are a couple more SoundWalk tracks here, from 2004 & 2005. You can hear them layered on top of each other underneath Jimmy Pardo & David Feldman playing "Sevens", which is an iPhone game based on "The $24,000 Pyramid".

DeFord Bailey was the first black performer on the Grand Old Opry.

I briefly stop leaning on "Bob", and start poking at "Doug". Sometimes you gotta change it up, you know? Especially when there's a "Doug" synchronicity across two podcasts.

I'm not sure where I got the Incredibad track, but it was before I ever heard of The Lonely Island, and years before those guys were on SNL.

I first heard The Okeh Laughing Record used as a background bed under Jean Shepherd on his WOR AM radio show from the early 60s. There is a great podcast called The Brass Figlagee that collects hundreds of hours of Jean Shepherd radio shows that I highly recommend.

Los Ángeles Negros (The Black Angels) are a pop group from Chile. You may have heard this tune sampled by the Beastie Boys.

Hey there folks!

The tunes this week include some local San Pedro folks, and some lo-fi punks, and some who fall into both categories.

This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb

Quite a few of these tracks come from CDs I bought from the source, so to speak. I bought This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb's CD from them at a house show on 4th street in Pedro. They're great, but their stickers have been known to cause some problems with skittish cops & security guards.

I went to high school with 2 of the 4 Jag-Offs. Their split CD (with Four Letter Words) was also bought from them at a show. "Dookie Love" is sung by Jacob, who is my fave of their two vocalists.

EverLovely LightningHeart

The tracks by Glen Bach, EverLovely LightningHeart and James Adams are all on a disc called SoundWalk 2005, which was a fantastic annual event in Long Beach featuring a whole neighborhood full of sound art installations. They don't do it anymore, but it was great while it lasted.

The Reactionaries had their first show (with Black Flag!) at the end of my block, but I was only about one at the time so I didn't go. They were Martin Tamburovich, Mike Watt, D. Boon, and George Hurley. "The Big Lie" was recorded in George's shed behind his house on 17th St. in 1979.

Carla Bozulich

The Mike Watt record Ball-Hog or Tug Boat? had a different band lineup for each track. "Drove Up From Pedro" features Carla Bozulich on vocals and Michael Preussner on drums, Joe Baiza & Nels Cline on guitars, Spot on Mandolin, Danny Frankel on percussion, and Paul Roessler on piano. Mike Watt played bass, as usual.

not my tape, but one like this

There are a few pieces here from a cassette that I made in 1994. It's mostly sound-on-sound experimentation, with a lot of acoustic guitar recorded with a cheap mic on a couple of cheap boomboxes & a tape deck. Lots of natural overdrive & distortion there, with a bunch of effects and edits added digitally in 2017.

This live version of The Taxpayers' tune "Medicines" is the theme for a great medical history podcast I listen to called Sawbones. I recommend it.

The Vandervoorts, of Brooklyn, featured Dorthy Gambrell, artist of Cat and Girl, a fantastic webcomic that you should really check out.

Nels, Mike, Bob

The live version of Maggot Brain by Mike Watt & the Black Gang (Mike Watt - bass, vocals, Bob Lee - drums, Nels Cline - guitar) is my favorite version of that tune.

Hi Heroes!

It's part two of my Comic-Con show!

This one has all the Marvel stuff, whereas last week had all the DC comics stuff, if you hadn't noticed.

Lebanese-American superstar Tiny Tim sings a weird song (the only kind of song he ever sang, honestly) about comics. This portrait is by Drew Friedman.

If "Tiberius Rising" doesn't make any sense, maybe this photo will be a clue.

Steven Universe is maybe the best cartoon ever, besides all the other good ones.

 Marvel's first cartoon were real strange. They had great songs but the animation was very limited (although it was actual art from the comics).

I kept expecting this Ramones song in the new Spider-Man movie, but no dice.

 Spidey Super Stories on The Electric Company was maybe my first exposure to the character. I still love it.

Adam WarRock used to co-host the War Rocket Ajax podcast that I listen to until he quit his job (as a lawyer!) and became a full-time rapper. This album artwork is by Evan "Doc" Shaner.
