Artificial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 31

Hey there folks!

The tunes this week include some local San Pedro folks, and some lo-fi punks, and some who fall into both categories.

This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb

Quite a few of these tracks come from CDs I bought from the source, so to speak. I bought This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb's CD from them at a house show on 4th street in Pedro. They're great, but their stickers have been known to cause some problems with skittish cops & security guards.

I went to high school with 2 of the 4 Jag-Offs. Their split CD (with Four Letter Words) was also bought from them at a show. "Dookie Love" is sung by Jacob, who is my fave of their two vocalists.

EverLovely LightningHeart

The tracks by Glen Bach, EverLovely LightningHeart and James Adams are all on a disc called SoundWalk 2005, which was a fantastic annual event in Long Beach featuring a whole neighborhood full of sound art installations. They don't do it anymore, but it was great while it lasted.

L-R: Martin, Mike, George, D.

The Reactionaries had their first show (with Black Flag!) at the end of my block, but I was only about one at the time so I didn't go. They were Martin Tamburovich, Mike Watt, D. Boon, and George Hurley. "The Big Lie" was recorded in George's shed behind his house on 17th St. in 1979.

Carla Bozulich
The Mike Watt record Ball-Hog or Tug Boat? had a different band lineup for each track. "Drove Up From Pedro" features Carla Bozulich on vocals and Michael Preussner on drums, Joe Baiza & Nels Cline on guitars, Spot on Mandolin, Danny Frankel on percussion, and Paul Roessler on piano. Mike Watt played bass, as usual.

not my tape, but one like this
There are a few pieces here from a cassette that I made in 1994. It's mostly sound-on-sound experimentation, with a lot of acoustic guitar recorded with a cheap mic on a couple of cheap boomboxes & a tape deck. Lots of natural overdrive & distortion there, with a bunch of effects and edits added digitally in 2017.

This live version of The Taxpayers' tune "Medicines" is the theme for a great medical history podcast I listen to called Sawbones. I recommend it.

The Vandervoorts, of Brooklyn, featured Dorthy Gambrell, artist of Cat and Girl, a fantastic webcomic that you should really check out.

Nels, Mike, Bob

The live version of Maggot Brain by Mike Watt & the Black Gang (Mike Watt - bass, vocals, Bob Lee - drums, Nels Cline - guitar) is my favorite version of that tune.

Leave a comment to let me know what you think of all this stuff, okay? I'd really appreciate it.

Enjoy!

Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill

Artificial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 30 (29b)

Hi Heroes!

It's part two of my Comic-Con show!

This one has all the Marvel stuff, whereas last week had all the DC comics stuff, if you hadn't noticed.

Lebanese-American superstar Tiny Tim sings a weird song (the only kind of song he ever sang, honestly) about comics. This portrait is by Drew Friedman.

If "Tiberius Rising" doesn't make any sense, maybe this photo will be a clue.

Steven Universe is maybe the best cartoon ever, besides all the other good ones.

Marvel's first cartoon were real strange. They had great songs but the animation was very limited (although it was actual art from the comics).

I kept expecting this Ramones song in the new Spider-Man movie, but no dice.

Spidey Super Stories on The Electric Company was maybe my first exposure to the character. I still love it.

Adam WarRock used to co-host the War Rocket Ajax podcast that I listen to until he quit his job (as a lawyer!) and became a full-time rapper. This album artwork is by Evan "Doc" Shaner.

Anyway, that's the end of my Comic-Con special(s). Talk to you guys next week for a more regular show, with podcast clips & Ruby.

Excelsior!

Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill

Artificial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 29a

Hi, Heroes!

This week's podcast is actually on time!

I'm going out of town this week so I needed to make a show quickly. Since I'm going to San Diego for Comic-Con International 2017, I figured the theme would be easy. It's comics & pop culture!

Mostly it's superhero stuff, but there are a few sci-fi TV themes tossed in that aren't technically comics related. All of this stuff would definitely be represented at the San Diego Con though, you bet!

I couldn't resist including Laurie Anderson again in the Superman section, I love that song. Petra Haden shows up again, too!

Dana Gould is a really funny guy. He was a writer on The Simpsons for many years, and I included him in this show because we'll be seeing him on Friday at The American Comedy Club in San Diego!

Metamorpho never had his own show, but he did get a theme. He was created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon in 1965. I'm hoping to get a sketch of him from Ramona Fradon at the convention!

Another song by nerd-rock outfit Ookla The Mok shows up here. They're funny, those guys.

I have a lot more versions of the Batman theme than the one included here. Instead of Link Wray it might have been Al Hirt, Jan and Dean, or "The Sensational Guitars of Dan & Dale", which was a studio group featuring members of Sun Ra's Arkestra and Blues Project. Covers of the Batman theme were very popular in 1966.

That's Ted Knight from The Mary Tyler Moore Show doing the announcing on the Flash & Aquaman intros. The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure was from a few years before the more well known Super-Friends.

Like Batman was popular in 1966, disco covers of Star Wars music was pretty big in 1977. I have at least three other examples that I didn't include here.

This version was the big hit. I have it but it's not in the podcast.
This isn't the version I used.
I didn't use this version either.
We close out this episode with Jonathan Coulton singing about zombies, but wait! It's not over!

Tune in next week for Part 2 of my Comic-Con special, because I'm not making a podcast episode from my hotel room.

Excelsior!

Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill

Artificial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 28

Hey there folks!

A quick one, very late this time.

Most of these tracks were downloaded in 2004-2005, in the height of the music blog era (well, for me at least. Blogs like Stereogum and Said The Gramophone shared a track or two every day, and I slurped them all up. Some of them were shitty, but many of them were great! Other blogs shared whole albums, and this is a good part of why I have so damn many mp3s to this day. These blogs are mostly gone now, but the files linger on...

The comics & pop culture podcast War Rocket Ajax puts out an Every Story Ever special episode monthly, where they attempt to rank every comics story... ever. If you've never read "Dark Dungeons", the Jack Chick tract the hosts (Chris Sims and Matt D. Wilson) discuss in this week's clip, you owe it to yourself. It's really a hoot. The whole thing is right here.

I'm going to San Diego Comic-Con next week, so hopefully I can get another episode out before I leave. Comics themed? Maybe. Talk to you all then!

Enjoy!

Artificial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 27

Hey hey!

No theme this week, really. Mostly a low-effort podcast with some covers, and some live rant/jams from the stage at the 19X-Day Drill, in honor of 20X-Day which is on Wednesday.

The first one is by Rev. Ivan Stang (the Sacred Scribe of the Church of the Subgenius) and the second one is by Rev. Argus Faux.

According to the Church of the SubGenius, the world will end in a fiery invasion by aliens from Planet X on July 5, 1998. (All dues-paying SubGenii will be ruptured up in the Escape Saucers of the Pleasure Gods/Goddesses.) The fact that this hasn't happened yet is merely an indication that it isn't actually 1998 yet.

There are a couple of fun covers this week. Lesley Gore's awesome version of AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds" is from a CD called When Pigs Fly featuring oddball covers (Songs You Never Thought You'd Hear). The Shonen Knife version of Top Of The World is from the same place as the Sonic Youth cover (Superstar) from a few weeks ago. There was a tribute album called If I Were A Carpenter released in 1994 that included both of those covers.

Petra Haden recorded a version of The Who's album The Who Sell Out that is pretty fantastic.

Shape of Things to Come by "Max Frost & The Troopers" is from a 1968 movie called Wild In The Streets which was about a youth revolution brought about by the lowering of the voting age to 15. Max Frost was the 15-year-old rock star who became president. I've never seen it, but the music is pretty great.

There are also a couple of movie clips that are taken from that same episode of The Hour Of Slack.

I'll talk to you folks next week, okay?

Enjoy!
