Artificial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 26

Hello again!

The podcast went a bit over schedule but I put that on me. There are a heck of a lot of editing in this one, it took a while to come together.

Toronto's Shaw-Han Liem, aka i am robot and proud, starts it out, but right away you might be aware of the "special sauce" that's drizzled all over this episode: it's The Conet Project's recordings of Short Wave "Numbers Stations". These mysterious broadcasts, mostly coming from Europe, are presumably some kind of encrypted messages & spycraft so governments don't want to officially admit they exist. Spooky!

I heard the episode of the memory palace (hmm, more intentional lower-case) called "Numbers" that was about the 1969 televised draft lottery, but I only used a couple of seconds of Nate DiMeo (the memory palace host & creator) talking at the beginning, and instead used audio from a YouTube video of the CBS News segment. The Norelco ad aired in the middle of it, if you're wondering where that came from.

A lot of this episode's music is sort of dreamy, atmospheric stuff, often edited for length & also if there were any vocals I cut them out. I'm pretty proud of some of these edits actually, the Stereolab song had almost three minutes of vocals in the middle of it but I was able to join the beginning and end of that tune pretty seamlessly I think.

The music behind the Nick Kroll & John Mulaney interview segment is a recording of Judee Sill from a televised BBC concert. It was recorded by a mic held up to a TV speaker (in 1972), which is why it's so hissy. It was adjusted to make it more listenable, and then I adjusted it more because I wanted it in the background. I got it from Bob Claster's Judee Sill site. It's pretty great.

Oh, Hello! (Nick Kroll & John Mulaney's Broadway show) is fantastic, and is on Netflix. You should watch it.

Last note, I don't know who the Dellwoods were, but that song is from the album "Fink Along With MAD", from the usual gang of idiots.

Talk to you folks next time!

Enjoy!

Artifcial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 25

Hey there folks!

This week I tried a different method of integrating music with podcast clips. Tell me what you think!
Jordan, Jesse, Dave Shumka.

Jian Ghomeshi is not a good guy, you can google him if you want to know more.

Mantronix

There was a vocal portion of the Mantronix tune, but I cut that out when I chopped & rearranged it.

Shooby Taylor was a unique vocalist. I could do a whole show about "outsider" artists like him, but would that be too much? Let me know if you all would be into it.

The theme this week, such as it is, is "Energy". It was suggested by listener Cara in New Hamburg, thanks Cara!

I mashed up the soundtrack to a movie without music (Stereo, 1969) with the soundtrack to a movie without dialogue (After Cease To Exist, 1977) (I actually don't know, but the file I have has no dialogue). There's more where that came from...

Stereo (1969)

Finally, Austin's own Roky Erickson. He's another one o' those Monster Kids. He saw demons for a while, but he got better.

Until next time!

Enjoy!

Artifcial Radio Hour with Rev. Dr. Dr. Phill Part 24

Hello folks! Only slightly late, but nobody really notices these things but me I'm sure.

Alvin Lucier and his long wire.

Many of the clips on this week's show come from one episode of the Hour Of Slack podcast. A lot of good stuff on that one. Besides that, a few long experimental pieces (Pierre Henry, Alvin Lucier, and Maryanne Amacher) and a couple kinda oddball instrumental pieces (Mastodon and Plastic Bertrand).

Maryanne Amacher is often crouching in photos.

Also, a new version of the Artificial Radio Hour ID at the beginning of the show, now with the voice of Ellen Barkin saying the word "Radio" joining Poly Styrene (Art-I-Ficial) and Tom Kenny (Hour).

Ellen Barkin, seen here in The Fan.

If this installment sounds low-energy, that's on me. I feel like I've been dragging this week. Bleh.

I think next week may end up being loud and fast and weird. Get ready for it.

Until then, enjoy!
